Experiments

Here in the Experiments area you'll find all the brow-furrowing, chin-stroking activities that The ECC has been up to. Mischievous MP3s, vituperous videos, cued and ready for instant consumption and sardonic satisfaction.

Note the categories to the left. If you want only music, click MP3s. If you want only videos, there's that too. You can also peek into our Testing Area to hear beta tests and unfinished experiments that we're playing around with.  And if you're wondering just what the hell we were thinking when we made those experiments, you might find the answers in our blog.  Recent additions to all four categories are listed below.

We've been fans of our next special guest for years. In that time Jason Forrest has been active under many incarnations: from host of WFMU's AD&D show under his ill-fated DJ name DJ Donna Summer (seems there was already a famous Donna Summer; who knew) and on to starting the Cock Rock Disco and Nightshifters labels and even his own TV channel, the incredible Network Awesome... he even developed his own app. Get the complete playlist at: http://evolution-control.com ... Our second music guest episode in a row -- this week it's experimental techno super duo The Fallen! We've been wanting to get Kevin (FBK) and James (Plural) on our show for a while, and at their great 2014 Fuse Factory performance we cornered them to nail down a date. Their dark, sparse, atmospheric beats are driven by live energy and gear lust but hide their humor and BFFness which comes out in our interview. Happy birthday, noise! Today on The Sound Of Plaid we celebrate the 100th birthday of Luigi Russolo's Art Of Noises manifesto, written March 11th 1913. An Italian futurist, Russolo's influential text plays a pivotal role in modern music theory and predicted our current world of mashups and sampling one century ago. During this show we hear some of his intonarumori boxes as well as the 80's band Art Of Noise, who obviously owes their existence to the manifesto both in name and style. It's his machines that caught our attention: first his line of drone machines followed by the more recent dub machines, all shiny machined metal that hides controllerist guts used to trigger years of distorted square waves. On this week's Sound Of Plaid we bring you a lovely present, just in time for Christmas: mashup mavericks A+D! In addition to mixing together some of the most listened to mashups out there, DJs Adrian and the Mysterious D are also the force behind the blockbuster Bootie mashup club nights in major cities around the world. They've also just released their new Bootie holiday mix CD A Very Bootie Christmas 2 and are gearing up for a massive New Year's Eve event here in San Francisco. We chat with A+D about all of the above, and bop around the studio as they spin a few choice cuts (cuts-n-pastes?) of their choosing...The Sound Of Plaid - 2009.12.22

Ahhh, a Sound Of Plaid theme worth saving up... "Cream Of The Crap" is the section of records in the ECC archive that holds the best thrift scores of all: album that only cost a dollar but ended up worth quite a bit more.  Just to make this episode creamier (and hopefully not crappier), we invited some friends over to join us -- thanks to all of them, and especially to Tumbleweed (KALX), Robert (Kreamy 'Lectric Santa), and Owen (Club Vertigo) for adding their own crap to they... uh... pile.

In this episode of The Sound Of Plaid: Beatles And Other Animals.  We listen to a recent performance of finely chopped Beatles (or at least of their music) surrounded by a veritable zoo of other animal-related tunes: Penguins (funky, and otherwise), Rats (catching; in my room...), Pussies (missing cats, and missing "cat"), Dogs (atomic; friendly; lusty), all bookended by Turtles... got the picture?

Download, or listen:

Still haven't got the picture?  Then watch this video of the finale of that Beatle-choppy performance:
