Gunderphonic gutsGunderphonic was one of The ECC's last cassette releases, and also one the most successful. It was also the first in a string of uniquely-packaged releases to follow. The cassette album was packaged within a hollowed-out 8-track tape, taped to hinge open like a cosmetic case. The cassette was located inside, with a custom sticker outside including liner notes.

This release was The ECC's first album of 100% sampled and collaged work. Released in 1994, this was well ahead of the digital editing revolution -- thus, 90%+ of the material was cut and pasted in analog. Gunderphonic (named as an homage to John Oswald's Plunderphonic) included both Whipped Cream Mixes, released later on Eerie Materials (1996) and much later (circa 2004) cited as the origins of the Mash-Up genre. Mash-Up's popularity has gone hand-in-hand with the availability of easy digital audio editing -- however, those original Whipped Cream Mixes were done in analog, with only a 4-track cassette deck (Tascam Porta-Two) and a linear-armed, non-DJ turntable... with no speed control.
